Technical Report (Australian Cylinders & Pistons) by G. Yarocki

Lots of goings on at the Yarocki Shop. The Australian cylinders, the ones I bought from Gregg Hutchinson some three years ago are now running on my sidecar rig. This is DGP 6012.

Greg's two ring aluminum pistons are also running in this machine. Stainless steel valves were used but since the Australian cylinders had very high valve pockets I chose to not use hardened seats. Even though I used these seats in two machines with good results, I still favor using them only when the seats are already too deep.

The repro valve springs were used along with all new pins, bushings and rollers. We found some of the original rollers, which I assume were Indian, in very bad shape. These rollers were deteriorated from what I believe to be cyanide hardening on the surface only. Please use new, state of the art, rollers.

My rider, DGP 7199, which is referred to as “The Beast” is alive and well due to a complete engine, transmission and clutch overhaul. This machine is set up with two ring cast iron pistons, stainless valves and all new innards. Both these machines are using cast iron valve guides with stainless valves. No problems yet with around 300 miles on each machine. Some believe bronze guides are best used with the stainless valves.

I've had speedometer problems. The speedos I've had re-built record the mileage fine but seem to stop recording speed at 20-30 mph no matter how fast you go. Work is in progress on this problem and a report may be forth coming in future Wows.

It's just impossible to express how pleased I am with both DGP 6012 and DGP 7199. Both these machines have been out daily. They are a total joy, usually starting on the first kick, even cold. I have to do the “slush kick” slow or the darn thing will start and stall before the choke can be pushed down one notch. End
