101 Valve Push Rod identification

    Hi all,

I'm after some help with the 101 Valve Push Rods.

The Parts Book lists each of the 4 Valve Push Rod with a different Part Number.

Inlet & Exhaust are clearly of 2 different lengths, that is obvious.

What is the difference between push rods that each Valve Push Rod would need a different part number?

A different part number would imply each Valve Push Rod is different in some way.

But what makes the Front/Rear Inlet Pushrods each need a separate part number?

And, what makes the Front/Rear Exhaust Pushrods each need a separate part number?

Is it a length variation between each one, & how do you identify each?

    Anyone got any information?

Looking for some help & feedback on this.

    Thanks.

Hi David, the exhaust pushrods have a vertical groove machined in them for improved oiling, otherwise same dimensions as respective inlet pushrods. Probably not a disaster to use without, we used to grind a groove if correct ones worn or not available, there were repro ones available for a few years with a spiral groove on all of them, not sure if they are still available. Anyone know?

    Hello Tim,

Thanks for that info; much appreciated.

OK, so I have one "short" pushrod with a vertical oil groove; & one "long" pushrod with a vertical oil groove!

So which is the correct pushrod for the Exhaust - the Short one, or the Long one?

    Thanks,

    David.

Hello David , Tim,   My parts book show different lengths for front and rear push rods , see attached . Can you confirm Tim what is correct , I am sure I read somewhere that the rear rods are shorter but cannot find it at the mo ! Or am I getting confused with Chief or earlier Scout ?? (I can do that quite easily without trying:) ) Ken

    Hi Ken,

    Thanks for your input.

Your point was sort of what I was asking about.

after a bit of digging, here is the answer(s).

    this might help others.

it's simple stuff, but not written down anywhere in the riders Handbooks, or the R & O manual. And, if you look at the parts book, it is confusing with individual part numbers for each of the 4 pushrods; meaning each pushrod is somehow different, but not explaining or illustrating the difference!

    Here's how it goes:-

The pair of Short Push Rods got to the Rear cyl.

The pair of Long Push Rods go to the Front cyl.

Of each pair, one pushrod has an oil groove down it, & this grooved pushrod goes for the Exhaust.

So, each pair of pushrods is different in length, & of each pair, one has an oil groove & one has not. Hence 4 different part numbers.

    It makes sense once explained.

Maybe this will help someone else as well.
