Valve float

I set my valves to .006-.008, and on the front cylinder( I believe) I am getting intake valve float starting at about 40 mph.  Anybody else ever experience that?

    Thanks, Bob

Possible your valve springs are weak?

It is possible.  Anyone else have a valve float issue?

Hi Bob, Are you running STD cams ?, if you are rumnning a "lumpy" cam, that may show up a weak valve spring that was previously happy with the STD cam.

I am not sure which cam is in the motor.  Things were going great and then the issue started where I was getting positive air flow out of the carb and a loss of power when that starts.  Only happens at high rpm.  Motor runs like a watch until higher rpm all of a sudden.

When my 101 suddenly lost some of its power (I didn't note your issue of pressure out the carb), I right away took off the heads and found some decoking was in order but there was also a particle of carbon keeping a valve from closing.

I then took that as a opportunity to pull off the cylinders, have the local race machine shop very lightly touch up the valve seats, installed new valve springs, and while at it new rings on the pistons as well as take bore and valve guide measurements to see where things stood.

Maybe you have a buildup of carbon and loose bits holding up an intake valve from fully seating.

Just pulled the heads last week and cleaned everything.  Now I am out of head gaskets.  I did a compression test and both cylinder read the same.  I might try and do a differential compression test.

Valve float is the only thing that I can think of that starts to give me positive pressure out of the carb at high rpm.
