Hand oil pum

    Installed the hand oil pump assembly in my tank with all new parts as it never had one when I got the bike because it had a recirculating oil system. It does not push oil into the bottom end,is there a certain distance the valve has to sit inside the tube to allow oil in? I can feel it pushing air out the valve into the line but no oil.

    Hi Travis, did you check the state of the gauze in the bottom of the pump tube???. It's easily seen from the bottom end once you've removed the large brass fitting with the valve,  that the oil trap screws up into. I recently cleaned mine & it's definitely easier to service from below (outside) the tank.

    I don't think I have a gauze in mine Louie,all that is in there is the three leather pieces. It's not pulling oil into the tube to be pushed into the line for whatever reason so I'm not sure if the valve is in the tube to far or if I'm missing something else.

    Check it by removing the lge brass oil pump valve body/tap from the bottom of the tube, draw your pump handle to the top, then (with oil in the tank) see if your oil is flowing out the bottom of the tube?. If there's no oil flowing out, you have a blockage to the inlet hole at the base of the tube, on the forward side of the tube, whether it still has a gauze or not. If the gauze is there, even if it is clogged you will see it thru the tube hole at the bottom, it will be on the forward side of the tube close to the tubes bottom end, as described. Use a strong torch & if you don't see the gauze, give that area a scratch with a peice of bronze welding rod or similar. If it's just blocked (no gauze) you may be able to scratch/push your way thru the blockage with the rod. The blockage will most probably be caused by layers of rust & gunk accumulated over the last 100years. Welcome to the 101 Owners Club ;-)

    Is the hole in the tube supposed to be above the leather seal on the  brass valve at the bottom of the tank? Is there a print or drawing of how this is supposed to be set up?

    Hi Travis. 

    I have 3/ 28 Scouts   and 2 have original  pump bottom fittings and a shut of tap as  they had.   One has  a rethreaded HD   bottom fitting that was used from 28 onwards    This works very well and requires no Tap . 

    Have you fitted the top Leather bucket facing upwards?  .that is critical  to the operation as well as the order of ball and spring.   

    The only time I use the hand pump is at oil change   . I have an Oil scraper ring on the rear cylinder  only   but means  more careful attention to oil delivery pump setup so as not to over or under oil.

    If your pump is not drawng in oil -  for these pumps to effectively draw in oil from the oil reservoir the delivery end valve must be closed as the plunger is drawn up, then opened to push the plunger down to dispense that oil. Repeat that procedure as needed. This procedure is described in the R&O manual as necessary.

    Phil,yes the bucket of the seal is facing towards the top of the tank and I'm just priming for initial start,brand new engine.

    Robert, doesn't the check ball in the valve essentially work the same as closing the shut off  valve?
